It’s Metal Gear Solid Meets Portal, powered by Unreal Engine 5

Developer Motion Blur has announced Black State, a visually stunning new third-person action-adventure that, if the gorgeous announcement trailer is accurate, will combine the espionage action of Metal Gear Solid with the reality-bending portal technology of Portal. It will be powered by Unreal Engine 5 and is in development for PC.

After watching the full in-game trailer for Black State (seriously, watch it above), we asked Turkey-based developers Motion Blur a few questions about the project. First, what the story is about: “A former military legend is called upon for a mysterious mission: rescue a captured scientist and uncover the truth behind a catastrophic event. Assigned by enigmatic architects, the mission is shrouded in uncertainty, as several doors in the Unknown Area lead to unpredictable and dangerous destinations. With each door revealing new secrets and challenges, he must navigate this treacherous landscape, discovering what awaits him behind each threshold, to complete his mission and uncover the hidden truths.”

Our next question was about that Metal Gear comparison: “Of course we love the Metal Gear Solid series. While working on our extensive, nearly 500-page game design document for 2.5 years, we continually admired games like The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted, and many others that pushed the boundaries of development and gameplay mechanics. Inspired by these influences, our small team is dedicated to delivering the highest development quality and exceptional gameplay mechanics despite our limited size. We strive to create rich and deep stories combined with engaging gameplay mechanics, creating an impressive and unforgettable gaming experience. Our goal is to push ourselves to the limit and give gamers the best possible experience we can offer.”

“We’ve always admired games like The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted and many others that push the boundaries of development and gameplay mechanics.”

Black State has been in development for the past three years. The Motion Blur team says: “The idea for Black State was born from the creative mind of Kadir Demirden. This concept has been evolving in his imagination for over ten years. During this period, extensive research and development has been done to explore how a small team could produce a game with AAA quality.”

IGN will be publishing much more about Black State as development progresses.
