The Milwaukee Bucks signed veteran shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. to a free agent contract on Tuesday, completing their roster and likely finding their starting shooting guard.
Trent’s agency announced the deal on ESPN. It will be a one-year, veterans-minimum contract worth $2.6 million. It’s the only contract the Bucks could offer as a team operating under second-apron restrictions.
Trent, 25, was a second-round pick by the Sacramento Kings in 2018 but was immediately traded to Portland, where he became a teammate of current Bucks point guard Damian Lillard.
Trent played just under three seasons with the Trail Blazers before being traded to Toronto during the 2020-21 season.
MEET GARY TRENT JR.:Remember when Brook Lopez took off Gary Trent’s headband? Now they’re teammates.
He is a 38% shooter from behind the three-point line in his six-year career. He averaged a career-best 18.3 points per game for Toronto in 2021-22, when he started 69 of the 70 games he played.
Since becoming a regular in 2020-21, Trent has averaged 16.2 points per game and shot 38% from his three-pointers.
Trent played in 11 postseason games in Portland and Toronto, making 36.5% of his three-pointers.
The Bucks entered the 2024 free agency period as a team with limited roster flexibility, as they signed draft picks AJ Johnson and Tyler Smith. With three roster spots to fill via free agency, the team had officially added guard Delon Wright and forward Taurean Prince.
Because the club was operating under the second platform restriction, they could only offer them a minimum contract.
