The Galaxy Watch 7 offers more features and benefits compared to the Galaxy Ring

After first being teased alongside the Galaxy S24 series back in January, Samsung finally unveiled its first smart ring, the Galaxy Ring, during its recent Unpacked event. Alongside the new smart ring, the tech giant also introduced the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra.

Now that these devices are available for pre-order, you might be trying to decide which health-tracking wearable to choose. Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t spend your money on the Galaxy Ring and opt for the Galaxy Watch 7 instead.

AMA: I’ve used the Galaxy Ring. What do you want to know?

Samsung has finally launched its first smart ring after almost a year of teasing. Both myself and our Gadgets Editor Taylor Kerns had the chance to try out the Galaxy Ring for ourselves, putting it on and getting up close and personal with the brand new charging case. With smart rings being so new, and especially for Samsung, we suspect you have a few questions about what the Korean giant has in store for us, from sizing to specs, and from price to performance. So fire away and let us know what you need to know about Samsung’s latest wearable.

1 It is cheaper

The Galaxy Watch 7 starts at $300

Judging by the numbers, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 offers more bang for your buck. While the Galaxy Ring is one of the smart rings without subscription fees, it still carries a hefty price tag starting at $400. The Galaxy Watch 7, on the other hand, starts at just $300.

Even the most expensive variant of the Galaxy Watch 7 — the 44mm model with cellular + Wi-Fi connectivity — is still cheaper than the Galaxy Ring, at $380. If budget is a constraint, or you simply want to get the most for your money, the Galaxy Watch 7 is the better buy.

2 It offers a full-fledged smartwatch experience

Check notifications, interact with apps, and more

This isn’t limited to just the Samsung Galaxy Ring vs Galaxy Watch 7, but the broader smartwatch vs smart ring debate in general. If you’re planning to invest in either of these wearables, keep in mind that a smartwatch will always offer a more comprehensive experience than what a smart ring can deliver.

Sure, the Galaxy Ring may be less intrusive and won’t disrupt your daily life like a smartwatch, but its capabilities are also limited.

The Galaxy Watch 7, on the other hand, offers a full suite of features. You get notifications right on your wrist; it runs the latest Wear OS 5, so you can access your favorite apps, and it has a large display that can do much more than a smart ring. You can even pair it with your earbuds and enjoy music on the go, without having to rely on your smartphone.

Additionally, the Watch 7 is a standalone device that can function independently, without you having to rely on your Galaxy smartphone.

Smart rings aren’t the game-changer they claim to be

3 Superior health tracking features

Some features are only available on the watch

Smart rings are small, and their ability to measure health tracking metrics is limited due to their size — there are only so many sensors you can fit into such a small package. The Galaxy Watch 7, on the other hand, has a full arsenal of sensors, allowing it to offer more (and more accurate) health tracking capabilities than the Galaxy Ring.

For example, there are some health tracking features, such as ECG, body composition analysis, and blood pressure monitoring, that are only available on the Galaxy Watch 7. And if you want to track your run outdoors without taking your smartphone with you, you can do so on the Galaxy Watch 7 thanks to built-in GPS, unlike the Galaxy Ring.

While the Galaxy Ring is better at other health-tracking features, like sleep monitoring, the Watch 7 offers a more comprehensive set of advanced health-tracking features.

4 Many customization options

Style your watch the way you want

Finally, if you like to style your wearable to match your outfit, the Galaxy Watch 7 might be a better choice. While the Galaxy Ring comes in a few different colors, it lacks the customization options of the Galaxy Watch. Once you select a color for the Galaxy Ring, you’re stuck with it. On the other hand, you can style the Galaxy Watch 7 by swapping out the straps to match your preference or outfit.

Galaxy Watch 7 is a better investment

To summarize, the Galaxy Watch 7 seems like a better investment compared to the Galaxy Ring. While the Ring has its advantages, the Watch 7 outperforms it in almost every area: fitness tracking, functionality, and value. The best part is that you can currently save even more on the Galaxy Watch 7 with some sweet pre-order deals available until July 24.

While the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 might not look like a major upgrade on the outside, it does feature some significant spec improvements, including the new 3nm Exynos W1000 processor for improved battery life and performance. It’s also one of the first smartwatches to run Wear OS 5 out of the box, and offers improved GPS tracking and an all-new BioActive sensor for better health tracking.
