Who is Ingrid Andress and how bad was her national anthem?

Because you’re gonna do it! Ingrid Andress (“four-time Grammy-losing singer-songwriter,” according to her IG bio) performed the national anthem at the 2024 Home Run Derby on July 15, and people from sea to sea were not impressed. The next day, Andress herself spoke about the performance.

Ingrid Andress is a country singer-songwriter. Her breakthrough single was 2019’s “More Hearts Than Mine” which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard‘s “The Hot 100” and peaked at No. 30. In 2021, she collaborated with Sam Hunt on “Wishful Drinking”, which also reached “The Hot 100”.

About those four Grammy nominations: In 2021, she was nominated for Best New Artist, and “More Hearts Than Mine” (she lost to Megan Thee Stallion) and the album were nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Album. In 2023, “Wishful Drinking” was nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Listen for yourself.

Andress admitted that she was “drunk” and that she was checking into rehab. “I was not drunk last night,” she wrote on social media. “I apologize to MLB, all the fans and this country that I love for that performance. I’ll let you guys know how it is in rehab. I hear it’s a blast.” Andress’ next show, July 17 at Row One in Nashville, is no longer listed on the venue’s website. Her new single, “Colorado 9,” is still apparently scheduled for release on July 24.

I do not mean That bad. Roseanne Barr definitely got more criticism for her 1990 version. And Fergie made bigger moves at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

And that song is too hard! The national anthem is an annoyingly hard song, for its ubiquity. The range you need is psycho, and if you sing it a capella, it’s even harder. Andress may have annoyed people with her italicized singing style and the lack of support for some of those big flourishes.

Even if you don’t know the term, you know the vibe. That way wayrm their vowayals and add a lot of vocal fry. When Camila Cabello was home for Quismoiss? That was italic.

To paraphrase a word French Clown Instructorsinging a little bit of cursive is okay, but a lot is harder. Plus she should take a page out of Charli XCX’s book when it comes to singing live.

Okay, first of all, Andress co-wrote the underrated Charli smash “Boys,” so it’s more relevant than you think. But here’s the tea: In a recent interview promoting spoiled child, Charli XCX said, “I drink and I smoke and I use AutoTune.” Charli has been using AutoTune live for years, and there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s so much software out there now that no one ever has to sound bad live.

Yes, according to Matt Rogers, she is a sure bet to headline WeHo Pride next year.

See, that’s what I thought, but those are actually a little bit shorter. Can you imagine that?
