Pay Fire: Wildfire near Placerville Airport prompts evacuations in El Dorado County

Firefighters race to extinguish flames and save nearby homes

WE’LL BEGIN WITH BREAKING NEWS. WE’RE FOLLOWING THE BREAKING NEWS IN EL DORADO COUNTY AS FIREFIGHTERS ARE BATTLING A FOREST FIRE THAT’S BURNING AT PLACERVILLE AIRPORT TONIGHT. PEOPLE ARE BEING ORDERED TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES AS CREWS WORK TO STOP THE FLAMES. THIS FIRE BEGAN AT ROUND THREE THIS AFTERNOON AND IS CALLED THE PAY FIRE. THE VIDEO ON THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN IS FROM AN ALERT CALIFORNIA CAMERA IN THAT AREA WHERE THE SMOKE IS SEEN. THIS AFTERNOON THE FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE AREA OF PAY DIRT DRIVE JUST SOUTHWEST OF THE AIRPORT WHERE FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS HANGARS ARE INVOLVED. CAL FIRE SAYS 20 ACRES HAVE ALREADY BURNED AND THIS FIRE IS SPREADING AT A DANGEROUS SPEED. NOW LET US GIVE YOU A LIVE LOOK AT THE EVACUATION MAP FOR THIS FIRE. THE AREAS IN RED ARE LOCATIONS THAT ARE UNDER THESE MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS. THIS INCLUDES THE AREA SURROUNDING LIONS PARK ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE EVACUATION ORDERS. SOME OF THE STREETS IN THAT AREA ARE CEDAR RAVINE ROAD, BUTTERFLY LANE, BRENDAN WAY, BARRETT DRIVE, TEXAS HILL ROAD, AND AIRPORT ROAD. MUCH OF THE AIRPORT IS ALSO UNDER MANDATORY EVACUATION POLICY, AND IF YOU GO EAST, TREE ROAD AND NEWTOWN ROAD AND THE NEIGHBORHOODS EAST OF THEM ARE ALSO UNDER THAT EVACUATION POLICY. THAT’S ALL. IF YOU GO TOWARDS CAMINO, THE AREAS IN YELLOW ARE UNDER EVACUATION WARNINGS. THIS IS EVERYTHING SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 50. BUT IT GETS VERY CLOSE TO THE HIGHWAY THERE. OF COURSE THERE ARE ROAD CLOSED IN THAT AREA AS WELL. KCRA 3’S PEYTON HEADLEY JOINS US LIVE FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. PEYTON, ARE YOU STILL AT THE AIRPORT? WE’RE STILL AT THE AIRPORT. THIS SEEMS TO BE A BIG FOCUS FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HERE. IF YOU LOOK TO YOUR LEFT, JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE OF WHERE WE ARE NOW, THERE ARE SOME FLAMES BURNING THAT THE CREW IS DEVOTING A LOT OF THEIR RESOURCES TO. WE’VE SEEN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT DROP OUTS IN THE LAST MINUTES. IT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER ONE IS GOING TO COME UP FROM THE TOP IN A SECOND, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE IT’S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AIRPORT. THAT THERE’S A LOT OF VEGETATION, A LOT OF FOREST. YOU CAN SEE A HELICOPTER ON THE OTHER SIDE THERE. SO THEY’RE FIGHTING THIS FROM THE GROUND. AND OF COURSE THEY’RE DEPLOYING A LOT OF RESOURCES FROM THE AIR. WE TALKED TO A GUY WHO HAS HIS AIRCRAFT STORED HERE. HE SAID THE BACK OF HIS HANGAR IS A BIT BURNT DOWN, BUT IT’S A METAL BUILDING. SO IT’S STILL STANDING. AND HE SAID HIS AC IS STILL WORKING FINE IN THERE. BUT AGAIN, THIS IS THE BACK OF THE AIRPORT, SO THAT’S WHERE THE MANAGEMENT PLAYERS ARE FOCUSED. WE WERE SENT TO A NEIGHBORHOOD NEARBY HERE, AS SOON AS THE AIRPORT TURNS INTO COUNTRY CLUB DRIVE, WE WERE ON DUDE AND DRIVE. THERE ARE MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER IN EFFECT AND THE MANAGEMENT PLAYERS HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB PROTECTING THE HOMES. THERE WAS A LOT OF FIRE RETARDANT ON THE CAR DRIVEWAYS, AND THEY MADE SURE THOSE HOMES WERE PROTECTED. WE DIDN’T SEE ANY DAMAGE WHEN WE WERE THERE. ABOUT AN HOUR AGO. THE HEAD OF 5:00, IF YOU PAN TO YOUR RIGHT, I WANT TO SHOW YOU THE AIRPORT AHEAD. THERE ARE THE HANGARS. YOU CAN SEE HOW MANY RESOURCES AND HOW MANY FIRE TRUCKS ARE HERE. AND ALL THIS SMOKE. THAT’S COMING. SO WE’VE SEEN A COUPLE OF THESE TREES THAT ARE BACK TO THE HANGARS, AND THEY SIMPLY LOOK ON FIRE, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE CREATION IS WORKING ON THEM NOW. OF COURSE, THERE’S STILL A LOT OF SMOKE COMING FROM THAT AREA. WE’RE STILL WORKING ON GETTING THE BACK OF THIS FIRE OVER HERE. UH, BUT AGAIN, WE’VE SEEN THAT, IN TERMS OF THE EVACUATION ORDER, THERE’S NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE STAYING AROUND, WHICH IS GOOD NEWS. A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE HEEDING THE WARNING AND GETTING OUT OF HERE. THEY’RE TRYING NOT TO SEE HOW CLOSE THIS FIRE IS GETTING. WHILE THE CREW IS FUSING TO USE ALL THEIR RESOURCES, THEY’VE ADDED A LITTLE DROP OF FIRE TO GET HERE, AS THESE FLAMES ARE GETTING VERY CLOSE TO PLACERVILLE AIRPORT. ONE GOOD THING ABOUT AN AIRPORT IS THE RUNWAY IS A GOOD FIRE VIEW. SO ALL THE VEGETATION BEHIND US SEEMS TO BE IN A GOOD PLACE, AS THE CREW KEEPS THE FIRE ON THAT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY AND TREATS THE FLAMES THERE. BRITTANY, REALLY AWESOME TO SEE THAT CHINOOK COME IN ON THE LIVE SHOT, TO GET THAT WATER, AND TO MAPP THE AREA OF THE FIRE. PEYTON, WHAT PART OF THE AIRPORT ARE YOU STANDING ON? IS THIS THE AREA THAT’S RIGHT OFF DUTTON ROAD ON THE WEST SIDE, OR ARE YOU ON THE EAST SIDE NOW? UH, THAT’S A GOOD QUESTION. WE’RE JUST OFF AIRPORT ROAD, NEAR COUNTRY CLUB DRIVE. I’M TRYING TO CHECK MY MAP, ZOOM OUT A LITTLE BIT, SEE EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE. UH, WE’RE SOUTH OF 50, WHICH IS WHERE THE AIRPORT IS, UH, I DON’T KNOW EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE, BUT TO THE LEFT OF US HERE, THIS LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THE BUILDINGS THAT THE AIRPORT MAINLY OPERATS OUT OF. FOR THOSE THAT ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA. BUT WE’RE NEXT TO A LOT OF AIRCRAFT THAT ARE STORED, NOT IN HANGARS HERE TOO. AWESOME. AND I’M LOOKING AT THE MAP LIVE. I KNOW YOU AND YOUR PHOTOJOURNALIST HAVE BEEN AROUND AND AROUND GETTING AS MANY DIFFERENT ANGLES OF THIS FIRE. I BELIEVE YOU’RE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE AIRPORT NOW, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHOWING US THAT LIVE. LOOK AT THE ACTIVE FLAME OUT THERE AND THE PROTECTION THAT IS GOING ON FOR ALL THE HANGARS. AND AIRCRAFT. THERE IS A LOT OF FUEL IN THOSE AIRCRAFT. SO IT IS GOOD TO SEE THAT THERE ARE SO MANY RESOURCES LINED UP TO PROTECT ALL OF THAT. ALSO. WE WANT TO TAKE A LIVE LOOK AT THE AREAS THAT ARE NOW UNDER EVACUATION ORDER. THE YEAR, THE AREAS YOU SEE IN RED, THE AREAS IN YELLOW ARE STILL UNDER EVACUATION WARNINGS, BUT A WARNING YOU STILL WANT TO BE READY TO GO, GET YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS, WATER, PHONE CHARGERS, ANYTHING YOU NEED, PACK YOUR PETS. YOU NEED TO BE READY TO GO AT A MOMENT. WE HAVE SEEN BOTH ZONES EXPANDING EAST AND RIGHT ALL THE WAY TO HIGHWAY 50. SO IF YOU’RE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 50, MAYBE GOING TOWARDS SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, YOU’LL CERTAINLY SEE WHAT’S GOING ON FROM HIGHWAY 50. AND WE’RE EXPECTING SOME TRAFFIC CONGESTION BECAUSE RIGHT AFTER PLACERVILLE, HIGHWAY 50 HAS THAT RED LIGHT AND IT’S JUST A COUPLE OF LANES LEFT. SO LET’S HAVE A LOOK. IF YOU’RE GOING EAST NOW TOWARDS THE SIERRA, PARTS OF CAMINO HEIGHTS ARE UNDER EVACUATION WARNINGS. THAT’S NEW NOW. SO WE’RE ZOOMING INTO THAT ON YOUR SCREEN RIGHT NOW. THIS IS THE VERY LATEST NEWS. AND THESE UPDATES WILL CONTINUE TO SHOW YOU THIS. THERE IS NOW A TEMPORARY EVACUATION CENTER SET UP AT THE PLACERVILLE LIBRARY AT 330 FAIR LANE IN PLACERVILLE. EVACUATING PEOPLE CAN BRING THEIR ANIMALS TO THE WEST SLOP SHELTER IN DIAMOND SPRINGS.
